Question

Web Host for a small startup business?

I've been working on starting up my own Indie development studio. Most sales and communication will go through the website. I've been using dreamhost, but today they're having some major networking issues, which doesn't seem to bode well for our longterm relationship. I've enjoyed the SSH access, and particularly their subversion implementation, so it'd be nice to find a comparable replacement.

Bandwidth and storage space will be important, as most software sales will be downloadable. Reliability is also imporant, as I don't want to lose sales when people can't access the site.

Any recommendations are appreciated. Or am I simply having a knee-jerk reaction to dreamhost's downtime and should be more patient?

Wow - i can't get to dreamhost.com.

I would wait to see what their response is. If you are happy overall, cut them some slack and see how they handle the situation.

Probably not, take a search and look at the laughable results of dreamhost.

Take a look at the real needs of your site, do some research on a few shortlisted hosts and try find a reliable host for your site.

Dreamhost seems to only have a place for personal websites, of course thats only in my own opinion.

Good Luck

The old phrase that is repeated often on WHT is you get what you pay for. Have a look around and check out some of the providers that frequent WHT. Good luck with your search and hope all turns out ok. Oh! Welcome to WHT.

Personally, reliability trumps bandwidth all the time. You can still get a good deal for under <$10/mo if the host doesn't oversell like crazy.

For example, the host I'm with lists plans like these:

Code:
Plan Storage Bandwidth Domains Price
Plan 1 3GB 100GB unlimited $3.99 Order Now
Plan 2 6GB 200GB unlimited $6.99 Order Now
Plan 3 9GB 400GB unlimited $9.99 Order Now
Plan 4 11GB 600GB unlimited $14.99 Order Now
Obviously there's slight overselling, but I bet the server runs much better. That's more of the kind of the provider yu're looking for.

When a shared host offers a customer more than I get with a dedicated server, I tend to get wary.

I was looking at hostmonster.com, as they seem to be around the top for all the reviews, and they offer SSH access (although no subversion). Would most people on this board concur with that review status? I'm really not sure where to start over again with researching hosting providers. I've found sites like www.top10webhosting.com, but the top 10 change regularly there, and seem to be based more on price than on reliability.

I'd be very careful with a site like that, it's based on affiliate payouts: Not quality.

Could anyone tell me how wirenine compares to dreamhost please? I think I want to get away from the oversellers and get something that's seriously reliable. Any feedback is appreciated.

Elias,

I personally haven't ever utilized their services, but there have been no complaints floating around -- I suspect that's a good sign

I don't know if they offer Subversion access though, most hosts who do don't list it publicly on their site -- Dreamhost is one of the few that 'publicly' caters to developers with some of their packages.

Hi,

Between wirenine and dreamhost.. i would go with dreamhost..since dreamhost is heavy overseller..

"Bandwidth and storage space will be important" do you mean you need alot b/w and space? or is this mean "reliable"?

Thanks

I need enough for the downloads the site will incur. And we need enough storage space to store the applications for download. And yes, wirenine would require some pretty serious monitoring of space and bandwidth. Right now (mostly because of dreamhost's major outage yesterday), reliability is trumping other concerns... because, what good is all that space, if you can't get to it?

Hi,

You will find that nearly any host will be able to service your needs! Stay away from the over sellers and i wouldn't run with the recommendations from sites like top www.top10webhosting.com as they do run on affiliate payouts or they pay to be there. Do your research, short list, and ask lots of questions. If you see a host in this forum you like search their name and read the reviews on them.

Happy Hosting!

Those review sites do tend to get biased based upon payouts but some are honest.

Dreamhost has its advantages as they tend to have larger bandwith capacity than your usual hosting company. There are upsides and downsides to all situations.

We usually send potential clients here to Webhostingtalk to do a review comparison when they want to compare us to another host.

Just do a forum search and you'll see many honest user reviews.
