    Best Ping Speeds for Australians

I have reseller accounts on servers at Burst and DV2 and while Burst is ****e and DV2 is stable, both are slow...with DV2 around 50ms slower on average.

Im wondering if any Aussies can recommend anyone that does good DED packages with better speeds, and good to perfect uptime at a good or great price??? Im looking for packages with WHM/Cpanel or similar that i can use for reseller accounts.

Im based in Country Victoria and my clients are all over the place.

Is there any datacentres in the US that can get better than 250ms???

Any advice you can offer would be great.

    perfect uptime
Expect to pay more than US$99 per month and you should be ok...... try rackspace, much more than US$99 per month but VERY reliable lol

We get good speeds and solid performance out of Rackshack Steve. None of the others we're using are performing as good at this point in time.

    --- 216.40.***.** ping statistics ---
14 packets transmitted, 14 packets received, 0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/mdev = 232.904/235.975/246.915/3.852 ms

I don't necessarily think ping times are a huge factor in determining a site's speed - sure it affects the initial response, but the thruput is the main factor.

Anyway, from "descartes" here in Sydney (Optus Cable) to the server at Rackshack (hosting account purchased from Gary/Editor).

    --- 216.40.xxx.xxx ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 209.161/211.463/214.818/1.865 ms

We have several Australian customers, they seem quite pleased. We're right next to MAE EAST, I'd be curious how our ping times compare with some of the others you check out. Ping to our server or some of our busy customers www.soloserver.com, www.wjla.com, www.marchofdimes.com.

I use DV2 and maybe your pings may not be supa fast like you're wanting (because of the distance and hops) but I can get constant 1.5MB downloads to the server and off the server even at peak times, so I think they are pretty good value for money.

    Thanks for the info everyone....

Gary, ive heard all sorts of rumors about rackshack being bad and having and causing all sorts of problems...i take it from your experience this isnt the case. Plus 235ms avg looks good...certainly a lot better than DV2.

I had a look at rackspace as well and they looked ok but i dont really know anything about them, or many of the others listed here....

I also looked at NAC and everyone ive talked to seemed to be happy about them as well.

My biggest concern is a couple of portal sites that get well over 100,000 hits per month, a lot of this via YaBBSE based forums. I have a lot of customers and users on 56k who complain that the sites load too slowly...especially the forums (hence thats why im looking for what will give the fastest responses times without comprimising uptime etc...)

I guess im a bit more educated now.

    Thanks everyone

I'm getting 270-280 from NAC right now, and around 240 from rackspace is normal. Obviously these are just one off ping checks and really wouldn't be a true indication of sustained performance. We've had in excess of 120 days uptime out of Rackshack (prior to a round of hard drive upgrades) and cannot fault them.

    Cheers

Looks like you need your own box for that one. Having that forum on a shared box will slow it down to no end. Get a smallish server from a supplier in NAC [site5, pwebtech]. You could pick up a smallish server for around the $200/mth that would serve your needs ok. Contact them via email [forget about their websites - always deal via email] and ask for a server that's about to come off a lease and you'll get a good deal.

    No, I meant rackspace.

Rackspace is 24 hops and ~240 pings from Canberra.telstra.net whilst there's 19 hops and a slightly quicker ping response time to a box we have at Rackshack. I have no doubt rackspace is a fine provider, but I can only comment on what we're seeing and the uptime that we've had out of rackshack.

    Cheers

he.net is usually better than this:

Well I guess that the best US location for a server catering to AU clients is going to be anyone on the US west coast with which telsra directly peers. I'm not smart enough to know who they might be

But I will also say this. I've got one customer who is "testing me out" after having been with a shared host using rackspace because he reckons that some AU customers just couldn't connect to his site without timeouts. Is it also a question of the number of hops and not just the ping times. I mean, I have tracerouted to some US dedi host and come close to 30 hops - imagine if I was behind a corporate firewall/complex private network at my end!

I am very curious to know how the other aussie hosts here that use nac.net and pwebtech find it suites their AU clients, because right now - even though I do not specifically market web hosting per se - I seem to have a stream of aussie web site owners approaching me on word of mouth looking for a better deal on their web hosting.

  21. #21

    and the result?

is there agreement on who provides the best ping speed / least amount of hops for sites hosted in the US accessed from Australia?

20 hops to Staminus, compared to 19 right now to a box we have at Rackshack.

    Cheers

they are the same hops I got...

and pinging between staminus and rackshack client results in one being better, then reversing next time I try !

    so close.... hard to decide....
support and reliability are the factors now I guess!
