Sounds about right. I was quoted $3600/month for 1mbit from PowerTel. It's all Telstra's fault.

All their reasonably priced plans are actually hosted in the US or Canada.

hehe, I meant to contact Gary regarding hosts... he gave me good advice about aussie co-lo's - I didn't mean that they provided cheap dedicateds within oz - Perhaps they do, perhaps they don't. The thread tells the story, NZ bandwidth is ridiculously priced too - Great for hosting normal sites, you just can't get the amounts at the prices that are common within the states.

The per GB charge within NZ is around $NZ20 per GB.....

    1 MBPS (Business Grade bandwidth) = NZ$3200/mth
    1 MBPS (Carrier Grade) = NZ$9000/mth

These are pretty much the asking rates of ISP's - There are deals to be done but it's still going to cost you lots a dollars.

(You need the more expensive option to host servers)

    It aint too cheap lol

Only about 10x the price of US-based hosting. Which tends to indicate that they haven't found cheap bandwidth in Australia either.
    Internet in Australia is

This is a real pain. I've been looking at getting a dedicated server (I'm currently at ez-web-hosting). US-based servers are cheap, but ping times are terrible, simply because of the distance. Australian servers give good ping, but are horribly expensive: bandwidth in Australia costs 10 to 100 times as much as it does in the US. Even though we now have the Southern Cross Cable, which gives us a huge pipe to the rest of the world, bandwidth is still horrbily expensive. For example, if I go over the 2.5GB cap on my ADSL, I pay A$149 (about US$80) per GB. And that's cheap - Telstra charge twice that! (My provider does give me "unlimited" off-peak downloads, which is why I chose them. Unfortunately, "unlimited" means 10GB.)

If anyone can provide cheap bandwidth in Australia, they'll find themselves with more customers than they know what to do with. Not holding my breath though.

I've seen this site before; the only relevant price I could find is for the "Stop Press 1 Only" offer for a Cobalt Raq at $199 per month. (That 1 Only Raq has been there for a couple of months at least.)

Don't like companies that make me hunt down their pricing. It's rarely worth the time.

By the way, I'd kill (or at least inflict minor injuries) to get bandwidth at NZ$20/GB here in Oz. Telstra must die!

Telstra are raising their ugly head here too.... not a good sign by the sounds of it..... I see Cogent communications vehicles running aroung the place - Have a feeling that pricing may be starting to lower over here - Time will tell

Some people do care, others don't.

No big deal but it can be handy if you are able access your machine just down the road instead of trying to contact someone in the US in the early hours

I couldn't get to Cogent's NZ site at all. So I dropped in on their US site. 100Mbit for $1000 per month. Now I'm upset.

Couldn't find any info on Google, and I highly doubt it anyway. I've been keeping my eye on these people though.

No. Choices here are very limited. Places like davnet, primus, globalcenter are pretty much your only choices - oh and telstra and useless ... errr i mean optus of course.
