Because I am a programmer, I ended up building a client-management system from scratch.. By doing so, we have a completely customized solutions for our company with no fees. For the average person, who would need to hire a programmer, I still think this may be an option to build a custom solution once for a one-time fee, so you can mold the app to your business, rather than mold your business around the app.
I would recommend Modernbill + authorize.net
I used paypal before, it not for hosting
Then I also did Dreamhost + authorize.net
Do not go with dreamhost , they are a very buggy software and support do not exist, it took them 2 months to answer my single question.
Modernbill is A+ support, Admin does a good job

While some of what you say may be true, I have found the normal modifications to be quite easy to make and have encountered no problems with the product which I use on many different sites. My only criticism would be a couple of issues with upgrades, but Locutus has always responded very quickly and professionally.

I am also looking at Perlbill and Modernbill but this statement raised a question. When it comes to these 2, what is the difference between them on the topic of processing credit cards? I thought that your merchant account or 3rd party vendor (HostCharge.com) took care of this function?
I've been using phpManager for quite some time. Just as Locutus claims, it is a low end solution for lower budget hosts. I agree that some of the scripting in it is a little confusing and should be better commented. However all in all it is a good deal for its money.
I was a tiny disappointed with they way that the last upgrade was released. The average user would not have been able to upgrade, they would have had to rebuild from scratch. Also the documentation on the scripts is poor. The forums are helpful but no replacement for a real guide to operation.
Basically if youve got the money for something like ModernBill - Go for it, if you don't phpManager is a great solution for you until you grow into a larger level of software.
Ah Jeff now you find out why it is important to choose your software first then find the gateway that will work with it.
Currently ModernBill TIer2 version 3.1 supports Authorize.net, PlanetPayment, QuickCommerce, eProcessingNetwork,
RTWare, & MerchantCommerce gateways. You might want to check the support forum to see what else might be out there.
Might also want to check the PerlBill site to see which gateways it supports.
From what I've seen, it looks like phpmanager does not let you automatically have recurring monthly (or quarterly, for that matter) payments. If you want to use phpmanager, you have to use someone like revecom or 2checkout so you can have recurring automatic payments.
Is this true? I know ModernBill supports this, although does PerlBill?
The problem I have with MBill is I am very picky about how the MBill interface will fit in with my site and I do not like the gray boxes that are on the interface. I know I can customize it by changing the colors, but can I have no color and a white background like Perlbill's order page and interface?
Another question .. does MBill have a support ticket system as one of its features like Perlbill or is just strictly for billing?

Yes it's really a nighmare configuring the settings as the users guide is very vague and was not of any help except for the installation guide.
I am almost 90% done and have some teething problems to sort out before rolling out the new version to replace the old one. I am holding on to my ver1.0 which was a breeze to install and configure and will only switch to the ver1.1.1 for clients when I am confident and have mastered using the new version throughly.
Fortunately, their support were excellent and that's really a relieve or I would have totally written off the ver1.1.1
Are you using a control panel now? You might want to check out H Sphere from psoft. It has a complete billing manager included with the control panel. It is far better than any of these third party processors since it will not only bill your customers for the regular charges but also it will keep track and bill them for any overages and extras. Plus it includes a great support desk. Check it out at http://psoft.net. The billing and support systems are available to administrators as well as resellers.
