I don't think there is any book on designing control panel; its just too specialized.

You may want to consider joining your forces with one of the existing open source control panel, since control panels are very resource-intensive.

We've been (We are) working on our own custom control panel and just now (well, 5 minutes ago) I put my htaccess module online (WOOHOO!) it only took a couple late nights and a few cans of coke.

I actually have a dumb question - How do cpanel / plesk do their htaccess comtrol, ie is there only 1 .htpasswd file? or multiple, 1 for each different directory.? Also My htaccess module will work great, unless my customers start editing their htaccess file manually as I'm not checking for additions (yet) so the next time they add a user or change a password, they'll lose what they added...

I've never used cpanel or plesk, yeah I know, why would I make my own without seeing someone elses, right? We got to re-invent the wheel, from the ground up!, and we designed it the way we throught it should be.

Personally, my next task will be a cron manager, does anyone know if cpanel / plesk are a true cron job , or a pseudo one?

    Thanks!

You may want to contact the creators of http://webcp.can-host.com . It's a very nice control panel, and you could help they out with your modules.

In Germany there are a lot of providers trying to design a control panel there is already confixx (http://www.yippi-yeah.com/en/startseite.php) with an english language module. I donīt think anybody will build a really good alternative to the "big systems".

I dont think there are too many people out there that want "big systems" to control their webhosting environment, if so how else would you differentiate yourself from other webhosting companies other than the typical promise the sky advertisements. I think the successful controlpanels have been the ones that were not "big systems" and allowed the webhoster to customize the server.

    Hi,

Ok so your saying that a big CP system wouldn't be used by individuals, but why. If the software is designed correctly then surley it wouldn't matter if the software was running on one box or controlling 6,000 its doing essentially the same thing. It would also be a major advantage for the growing host that could just add additional boxses with a few clicks then centrally control them.
