How to project customer totals for your business

Hey all

I'm debating getting into this crazy industry, and was wondering how folks project their total customer base? For other companies that I've been a part of we'd usually use census data since it would be a fixed area that the service could be marketed too (example: DSL service). But with hosting obviously the geography of the customer is not a limiting factor, so what would you use instead to determine the amount of potential customers?

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help answer my question.

I'll assume that I'm not phrasing this correctly or no-one has done this year?

as a roughly estimation, we multiply x 2 the number of new customers that we got on the same month but the past year, more or less, that's the number that we get.

Super thanks for the response! Now to find out what figures to base as a starting point and I can apply that in my estimates.

You must consider geography as one of factors to calculate. I'm not sure that most of Russians will buy hosting from French company. Simply because they don't understand language.

As Jedito told, you can project numbers based on current progress and adjust them with volume of your ads.
