Dedicated vs. Shared Reseller's IPs

Hello.

I have a reseller account that cAme with two free dedicated IP addresses which I assigned to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. I aslo had my provider rDNS those two IPs to my nameservers -which they did.

I did a whois on my dedicated IP with webhosting.info service and it showed some domains that use my IP but are not created by me in WHM.

I had a chat with the support dept. and here what he said.

IS HE RIGHT?

----------------------------
Please wait for a site operator to respond.

You are now chatting with 'T...'

T...: Welcome to ... How can I help you?

ME: Hello. I have a reseller hosting account with dedicated IP addresses. Isn't dedicated IPs supposed to be used only by my main domain and the accounts I create in my WHM?

T...: By default they use the shared IP of the server., you can request your account(s) be placed on dedicated IP's to the sales department.

Travis: The dedicated IP address request form can be located at: ...

ME: I already did that. My dedicated IP is: ... I also had this IP rDNS to my main domain: ns1.syserver.com

Riyadh: Please take a look at: http://whois.webhosting.info/MY DEDICATED IP ADDRESS

ME: There are some domains there that use my dedicated IP address but they are not my domains!

ME: ie. some domains which use my dedicated IP address (shown in the report by webhosting.info) are not my domains and are not created by me nor are in my WHM.

T...: They are just other accounts on the server.

ME: I thought that my dedicated IPs are supposed to be used only by my accounts not any others. Am I correct?

Tr...: That IP is assigned to several other accounts.

ME: So, what's the difference between shared IPs and dedicated IPs?! Let's say one of the domains (the ones I don't host) that "share" the same IP with my dedicated IP is spamming, won't my IP be blacklisted?

Tr...: It is not the IP that get's blacklisted. It is the whole server.

ME: If one of the domains that is sharing my dedicated IP address is caught spamming, what measure do you take in that case? I hope neither my reseller account nor the accounts I host will be affected.

Tr...: We take very strong action against people who abuse email and spam. We are also in contact with the top email providers to ensure the server does not get blacklisted.
----------------------------

Can a dedicated IP be shared? Is what "support" said true?

Please advise.

Regards.

He's right in something, if somebody does spam from the server, your email server is going to be blacklisted no matter if you have a dedicated IP, all the emails are routed through the shared IP even if your site have assigned a dedicated.

so you purchased a IP that somebody else is also using. That is wrong. Dedicated IP's means they are dedicated to you only. Your host is full of BS.

I didn't buy the IPs. They came free with the hosting package.

Believe it or not, my provider has an excellent reputation here on WHT To be fair, their service is great so far (two months now).

I also understand from the word "dedicated" that it should be dedicated to my own reseller account and the accounts I host (not shared with other accouts). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Here is what I think has happened from reading your post...

The host included two dedicated IP's which you used for your name servers. Your main website still needs an IP address to reside on as the two other IP's were already assigned to your name servers. This means that you would need one more additional IP address for your main website. From the response of the tech you spoke with it sounds like you are hosted on a shared IP.

This would make sense since you used the two IP's for name servers. Like I stated above, for a website and two name servers to all be on dedicated IP's you would need three dedicated IP's. Hope that makes sense.

When I first signed up with my provider, I was given two shared IPs, then I requested my two dedicated IPs for my private nameservers (ns1 and ns2). I also requied that my private IP addresses (which they provided ) be rDNS to my nameservers (they also did that). Only my mailserver IP is shared as shown with dnsreport.com. All the accounts I create in my WHM get the dedicated IP which I was supplied with.

Is that IP address the same as the IP your main website is hosted on?

I'm still a bit confused...

Yes. mydomain.com has the same dedicated IP address as ns1.mydomain.com and also the accounts I create in my WHM have the same IP.

I'm not the best with some of the technical end of things, but as far as I know using the same IP for your name server and other websites is not a good idea... anyone else care to chime in about this?

I'd be interested in hearing the answer to this as well. What would be the best way to set things up to accomplish what the OP wants to do - which is, I think, basically to protect the sites that they personally have set up in WHM ( as well as their own domain ) should any of the accounts that are sharing the server turn out to be spammers. Or is there nothing you can do since you're on a shared server?

ok, that's much better. You did not buy the IP's so they are server shared IP's. If you are on WHM/cPanel all you need to do is purchase a dedicated IP from your host then request the host to place all your domains under your own shared private IP. That's probally the solution you are looking for.

The best way do what the OP is attempting to do is to purchase at least three unique IP's. I would purchase at least four; I would use two for name servers, one for the main websites and use the fourth as a shared IP for customers. IP's are usually about $2 a month max, so it shouldn't be a problem.

You can't do anything about the spamming if you are on the same server. Most hosting companies are pretty diligent anymore about screening for spammers, but it still happens. Even hosting customers on your own dedicated server won't keep you immune from being blacklisted.

Hmm.. why not? probably the only bad thing about this is that somebody can do a whois to the IP and find who other sites are hosted there and find out that you are a reseller, other than that, I don't see any problem with it.
