Fast managed VPS for forum and wiki

I run my current site from asmallorange. I am currently using their shared hosting, but I am about to out grow it.

Im currently using 120GB of bandwidth a month, and it keeps growing. I have about 800 users on the forum, 150-200 active. 30 people on at normal hours, and peeks of 150-200 on tuesdays (when new stuff is released we talk about).

I am in talks to moving to a VPS at asmallorange, but I have never seen them recommended here as a VPS.

Id like room to grow, so at least 250GB bandwidth, 10(ten)GB of storage and something that is fast and reliable.

Also, im used to running a shared site from cpanel, so anything with cpanel, and as manages as possible would be better. I dont have too much time during school to upkeep the site. (why I love shared) PHP5 as the main php would be a huge plus, but if it runs side by side with 4 that is also ok.

I figured Id need 512RAM but I really do not know.

My budget is about $900/ year or about $75/mo.

(using phpbb and mediawiki)

Thanks in advance.

For a forum that big, try a VPS with HostinaBOX which basically runs on Lighttpd. You should be fine on a VPS with 256MB Ram costin around 20$ a month

You should be fine on a VPS, you just have the find the right VPS for you. I don't know about running it on 256MB, but with your budget you can definitely find a good reliable solution for your forum.

Good luck to you.

Thanks. How big of a site can I run on 512MB?

Or is that not possible to answer?

Im hoping that I could use the VPS to consolidate all my sites into one. (The others dont really use that much, less than 15GB of bandwidth)

It is pretty hard to judge how much they will use. Are they mostly dynamic (sql/php) or static (html/img) sites? Static sites will use less, so you could easily fit those on without worrying about usage. You could always go with a 512MB VPS and see how it runs.

The good thing about a VPS is they are easy to upgrade if you need more resources. Most companies can upgrade you from 512MB to 768MB or 1GB without problems.

Do a few searches here and I'm sure you'll come up with a list of highly recommended hosts. As others have pointed out it's hard to know exactly how many resources you'll need. Maybe one way of doing this is to have asmallorange take a look at your current resource use and try to extrapolate what you'll need based on your potential growth. Then see what they recommend as an appropriate VPS for you.

How has your experience with ASO been so far? It seems to me that the shared hosting is doing OK with your site so far? Don't let a lack of reviews throw you off (as long as there are no negative reviews = ) Its a plus that at your current size it's handling it fine (if I read between the lines on your post).

I normally suggest people stay with their current host if their experience is a good one and their offerings meet your needs. ASO does seem a bit pricey but then they very well may be worth it. A lower price is not always a better deal in this industry.

I do have to say that I like the fact that they seem to be FOSS supporter so kudos for that!

I really love ASO. They handle the site with ease. I was dugg a few months back and they did not complain even though I moved 20gb in 30hrs.

I would really recommend them to anyone that is not a fan of huge overselling.

Im actually going to try out their VPS here for a month and see how it handles.

I just want to update.
I went with ASO.
So far so awesome.
The computer i am on is shared with 3 others (as far as I can tell).
It is a quad 1.86ghz Xeon (1/4 of each cpu is available to me).
It might actually be over kill for now
