FAQ

What is this rsync you speak of?
rsync is a program for *nix systems to synchronize data. Imagine having a server with 60GB of data that you want to back up. With rsync, you only transfer that 60GB once and next time you will only transfer the difference between the old data and the new! It will save you time, money and bandwidth.

Can I use this as my storage space, like a file hosting service?
Unfortunately not. You may back up and restore as often as you like, as long as it's for a legitimate purpose. You may not use this service as an online hard drive.

What is the background of your company?
Talanov Media Inc. is a registered federal corporation under the laws of Canada. Talanov Backup is a subsidiary. The company was registered in January 2006 to provide online services, and owns a number of websites in its portfolio.

Are you a reseller?
We are proud to be a reseller of BQ Internet who have a reputation for providing quality service. We use their servers and their network, but we offer our own discounted prices and support.

With our prices, and BQ Internet's reputation you have nothing to lose, except the uncertainty of knowing if your data is safe.

If you have any questions about our services, please post in this thread.

seems to have great prices!

although i didn't read anywhere about the actual setup for the data?

drive types? sata/II scsi? sas? what about raid? 1/5/10? on board raid controller or dedicated card?

also. what brand/model is used (hard drive wise?)

some people dont trust X brand hard drives. or model XXX made by Y brand.

i.e. that Hitachi death something or another from i think the mid 90's ? from what i hear they had like a 1-4 week life span on average

im sure alot of people would be very "picky" of certain things with the backup data like the hard drive and raid type...

looking forward to your answers. (maybe your site gets a bookmark on my pc ?)

Glad to hear you're satisfied so far. My upstream, BQ Internet, is known for the reliability and uptime (I've had *very* few complaints with them, aparts from scheduled system maintenance). I would like to leave the more techinical details to Scott (BQ's owner) and he'd be happy to answer any technical questions you may have.

I really do completely agree with you, and I believe BQ hasn't failed anyone in quite a long time and they are very accomodating in their business practices. I will forward your concerns to Scott from upstream who will hopefully reassure your feelings.

If you have any more questions, do let me know in the thread.

Hey, and thanks for the compliment. Client safety, encryption and easy access are our top priorities.

By the way, if you have any further questions about our company feel free to send me a WHT PM. Hopefully we'll see you aboard.

Hello there,

At Kirill's request, I'll pop in here and include some technical details of the standard backup server:

Dual-core Opteron 265
4GB ECC RAM
Dedicated RAID card (Areca 1160 PCI-X)
RAID6 (dual parity, N+2)
15x750GB SATA2 (Seagate 7200.10 series)
GigE network connection

Is a control panel included with the service for managing the backups?

Yes, a basic control panel is included. You can test drive it here using demo/demo

As you can see it is quite basic, but our clients rarely access it as once regular backups are setup it's pretty much "hands-off".

The instructions seem to apply only to Linux servers. Can your system handle backups from Windows or FreeBSD boxes?

Any system that supports rsync or FTP can be used with our services. The are a multitude of applications for Windows which will act as rsync (although I suggest getting cygwin!), some even include scheduling capabilities.

As for FreeBSD, although I have never used it extensively, it should work out of the box considering the server you're backing up to is running FreeBSD itself:

PHP Code:
uname -a
FreeBSD server1
.talanovbackup.com 6.1-RELEASE-p3 FreeBSD
We'd be happy to give you pointers on how to get unorthodox systems up and running (drop us a line at the support email) but of course we can't offer full support.
