Do you use Unix, Linux or Windows?

For example if you use FreeBSD a good start is their handbook:

First thing you need to have is setup a firewall. Next is to make sure you are using latest software eg. kernel.

I agree the sub-forum Harzem linked above should be your first stop.

Assuming you're talking about Linux servers, the distro website may provide further guides in their help section e.g. Debian have a 'Securing Debian' document, on their website.
