The only problem with Google Checkout is that you cannot create automatic monthly payments.
Otherwise it would probably be the leading payment system.
Many people are waiting for this functionality.

which i think if an important factor for web hosting.
You don't want your customer to come back and do manual every month which some find it troublesome, i believe.

I've used Google Checkout for almost a year now without issues. I created a shopping cart module that is integrated into a CMS which several clients use.
They also have no fees until the end of the year. And are expected to undercut PayPal's fees when the promotion period expires again. Before November of 2006 they were 2% plus $0.20 per transaction.

What's wrong with having a merchant account and payment gateway? I'd take that over PayPal any day of the week, regardless of the business.

I am completely new to this ...
but with your own merchant account don't you have to have SSL certificate and collect the CC numbers on your own website?
Then your customers have to be sure your site is secure and your are honest.

I tried using Google Checkout to pay for an item I bought, and when trying to use my credit card, they authorized my card over ten times for some strange reason.
Needless to say, I moved back to PayPal.

Yep you should have to have SSL. Easy to get..
My customers never question my entering their info into the control panel or them entering it.
Google checkout: It's good for one time payments I have several clients using this on their e-commerce sites. Most hosting clients just want to give their CC info once and mot worry about it.

Yeah, you'll need an SSL certificate. You'll also need to get approved to even get a merchant account. I wonder which sees more fraud, PayPal or people who went through the process of getting a merchant account, payment gateway, and SSL certificate.
If you're doing just one-time payments, or little things here and then, then PayPal's fine for you. But if you're trying to run a business, you need a way to process credit cards on your site. Much more professional and reputable. Also good for weeding out the small-timers.

For large payments, Google Checkout is perfect. For small & recurring payments, PayPal is the best.

heck, you shouldnt even have a site that allows users to input their information (name, address, etc) without using SSL. Its just irresponsible, lazy, and cheap. Even a self signed ssl certificate is better than nothing.
