Frequently Asked Questions:

What is rsync?
Rsync greatly improves efficiency when compared to traditional remote backup methods. By synchronizing only those files that have changed since the last backup, using rsync results in large bandwidth savings. When combined with on-the-fly compression, performing daily rsync backup can result in less data transfer than it would take to perform two backups using the .tar.gz method in a given month.

What is rdiff?
rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another, possibly over a network. The target directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs are stored in a special subdirectory of that target directory, so you can still recover files lost some time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an incremental backup. rdiff-backup also preserves subdirectories, hard links, dev files, permissions, uid/gid ownership, modification times, extended attributes, acls, and resource forks. Also, rdiff-backup can operate in a bandwidth efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup and ssh to securely back a hard drive up to a remote location, and only the differences will be transmitted. Finally, rdiff-backup is easy to use and settings have sensical defaults.

What does the control panel do?
All the control panel does is display the usage of your account.

Just managed to get it.

Go through a nightmare last week, with no backup. A week worth of works are deleted, backup with the host are too old.

This is my first time doing this. Most of the account I don't have root access, hope you can provide a little bit of instruction what I should tell my reseller on how to backup my account using your service.

Thank you

We are still having problems with our server.

I have been working on this issue today, and it seems that the server
thinks there is less space than there actually is. I think I found the
problem, and I am working on resolving it. I should know for sure in
the morning.

Hello,

Since Otto hasn't updated this thread, I'll post a copy of the response regarding the same issue that was brought up in another thread:

Due to the popularity of Rsync Palace's recent promotions, the high volume of new backup traffic caused some technical difficulties that may have caused errors for some Rsync Palace users, especially new users. We have restored the system to a normal state, and then made configuration changes to better support the high volume. The storage server and network are more than capable of handling the load, and the configuration changes appear to have resolved the issue. We will continue to monitor the Rsync Palace system and make any other changes necessary.

To answer some specific concerns that were brought up:
* Rsync Palace has plenty of free space available. There is no overselling issue.
* The backup system has been online and responsive during this issue. The problem was that a small handful of users were having trouble adding additional backup data. In effect, the space became read-only for them.

Thanks for clearing things up.

Edit: Forgot to edit this thread, but the offer for 2XWHT expired Sunday.
