Anyone heard anything about wimax lately? I know that entire cities were going to start getting wired but i haven't heard anything lately - i live in New York and I don't think its gonna happen here anytime soon with the monopoly time warner's got going on.

We are expecing commercial WiMAX packages early 2008. Macedonian telecom regulator has granted two licenses and the operators are already building the infrastructure.

If you live in NYC wimax is already deployed and has some limited availability to business customers.

Originally wimax was going to be the solution for ISPs to provide wireless access to all. Hardware manufactures have focused on cell providers as they have the big pockets, so don't expect anything but Spring Wimax in the near future. If the FCC opens up additional spectrum it will be more realistic for the smaller guys to deploy wimax solutions.

towerstream.com was big in NYC in testing wimax. I don't know if they are actively using it yet.

I know SteadFast in Chicago has some testing going on within 5 miles of the DC. Sprint has also stated by the end of this year Chicago and DC will be live with Wimax for testing and the majority of the network in 2008.

My mate owns a company that resurface's roads and installs new lamposts and he has tied himself up with a firm that puts the cabling and wifi routers in the lamposts.

will be interesting to see how it turns out.

An interesting sidenote when we speak about Wimax is that the swedish surveillance agency FRA says that "Wimax is threatening national security", as Wimax is running in the same spectrum as FRA uses to monitor communication satellites and will be interfering with FRA's work in this field.

Wateen a service provider in Pakistan has already launched the world's largest wimax roll-out (at the time being). Motorola actually used the Wateen/Pakistan's reference to secure many more contracts around the world. The Wimax is now running in 22 cities.

They are completely unrelated - WiMax is nearly on par in terms of coverage with GSM and 3G networks.

I had read something relating to Sprint starting to offer Wimax under the brand name Xohm to NYC on down through central NJ.

Personally I think that wireless technology will eventually replace the standard wired connection, when connection speeds increase beyond the capability of copper then it will be a lot cheaper to replace with the likes of WiMax rather than fibers. Also think about the costs saved when building a new apartment block for example. Also think about how wireless access points have kicked off, this is essentially the same but over a greater area.

I believe it is a success in Shanghai.
