I'm not sure if I'd know how to work one of them Sun machines. I'd rather have a bunch of lesser-spec servers working together as a redundant cluster so there's no single point of failure.

That's why those sun boxes have 3 failover power supplies, and everything else too.

You don't pay $1m and get something that'll die easily.
For that you get a $99/month server, of course.

I was going to say the same thing. The only trick would be - how much would the CPanel developers charge to port WHM and CPanel to it? :-)

    Take care,

If you can afford one of those, you aren't going to be using CPanel, you'll be using your own proprietary software

Those are pretty darn nice, but I think if we are talking realistically here, my ideal server would be a Dell 1650 or 2650 totally maxed out with ram and raid5 drives.

Actually, the ideal setup would be to have a load balancer between two of the above machines and have them be mirrored. That would be nice.

    cluster

I'd like cluster then, with 256 nodes (should be enough for me), each node has:
    - Dual 1.4 Athlons
    - 4x78 GB IBM Ultra SCSI, in raid 0
    - 2 GB DDR RAM
    - FreeBSD 4.6
..and all of them connected via gigabit ethernet..

    Powered by AMD & FreeBSD.

even 100mbps is enough for clusters - you're not going to use all. gigabit is more then enough, so I think there is no need to connect them via fiber optic or develop your own milti-super-fiber-optic (I would spend money for more nodes in cluster then spend money on developing my own fiber optic).
