SEO & Subdomains

I've sifted through so many thoughts on this subject but have never found any real definitive answer

my question is

will a sub.domain.com contribute to its root domain search ranking ?

ie

you have one domain.com and it has its own stuff and ranking

then you add sub.domain.com although somewhat related to the root it will have different content and link to the root domain, consider this anology

you have a site about carstrains&automobiles.com and you have a subdomain like

newyork.carstrains&automobiles.com

the thought was instead of having to manage two separate domains, i'd make one as a subdomain for easy management and if the subdomain could contribute to the root domain search ranking, it would make it easier to focus just on the one domain and by one, subdomain included.

is there any value to setting it up like this ? or are we better off keeping it completely separate

I think you will probably find it wont have any direct effect on its parent domain by simply having the sub-domain in the search engines. Google will treat it like any other separate domain (Remember domain.com is actually a sub-domain of .com and domain.co.uk is actually a third level domain of .co which is a second level domain of .uk)

The only additional weight would be if you linked between them.

Although in the end no one really knows except Google..
