You wrote that you wanted to maximize the available disk space, and your requirement was just that 1 disk could fail without breaking the array. Then RAID5 is the one to choose - RAID0/1 wouldn't maximize the available disk space.
if you've got 5x36GB setup RAID5, that would mean you've got about 144GB useable. that's ((36x5)-36)GB...still a lot of space. plus since you've got five drives it'even better. RAID5 needs a minimum of 3 drives. however if you use three and one drive fails, your drive performance would be severely affected. a minimum of four would maintain performance and five is even better!!!
