Using Godaddy's 4yr plan for streaming data

Hi

Godaddy has this 4yr deal on their shared packages :
Code:
100GB/1TB BW - $4.28/mo - $205.4 for 4 yrs
5GB/250GB BW - $2.45/mo - $117.6 for 4 yrs
I've seen many users here reporting issues regarding their support etc.

But what if I wanted it for the sake of hosting images/SWFs/videos/other data etc etc and use another preferred-host to host my website and just link the data to the godaddy's domain ?

Would Godaddy be the best option in this case ?

Thanks

I bet they have something in the TOS against using their shared services just for storing and downloading of files ...

You're dreaming.

Shared hosts are overselling nowadays.
Use more than 2GB of that space and 10GB of the bandwidth and you'll probably get banned.

WOoowh ! Are you sure about that ? I mean why else would they provide 100GB space ? I thought GoDaddy was a reputed company.

They don't care if its legal or not - they will still ban you.
They DONT WANT you to use the space - being legal doesn't matter.
They'll just slap you a suspension for a reason like "Resource Abuse".

Some people turn off their brains when trying to understand hosting plans.
How much does a 100GB drive cost + bandwidth costs (lowest at $10 for 300GB) + staff fees?
Definitely more than $10 a month.

Read up a bit on overselling to get an idea of what tsj5j is talking about.

True, but for a Co like Godaddy, I thought they would have major tie-ups that'll reduce the cost drastically - just like the Microsoft Deal !

No, hardware is hardware, bulk purchase still costs money.

According to your logic, Dell should be buying hard disks at $10 each?
Wouldn't we be very stupid to give them a 90% profit?

Then how about 1and1's shared package $4/mo for 10GB/300GB BW ?
Or even Hostgator's 50GB space for $7/mo ?
OR dreamhosts' $7.95/mo plan for 151 GB space and 1.51TB BW !!!

They oversell...

That being said, not ALL overselling hosts will shut you down for using the alloted resources. They bank on the fact that most customers will not use their resources. However, if a few do, then well, that's to be expected.

You should do a search on these forums for 1an1 and Hostgator to find reviews and complaints (if any).

Disagree.

They don't want you to use the resources, and if you do they will suspend it.
Some think that with so many using little, they can use alot. That is a false opinion.

So far, I've only used 1 provider that allowed me to use alot of bandwidth on a shared plan.
Even so, I got suspended after my 5th GB - Dreamhost.

Complete nonsense. Clearly you have no familiarity whatever with GoDaddy. While I do not like them, and in fact left them around the first of the year for other reasons, not being able to use a lot of storage and bandwidth wasn't one of them. Where do you get this stuff, especially after someone complained in these very forums that they were being billed hundreds of dollars for EXCEEDING their bandwidth? Exceeding their bandwidth, my friend!

In my case, I used close to 400GB bandwidth on one of my plans with them, and they never complained. I wasn't crazy about performance or support, but I did get what I expected.

Now if we're talking of a high-intensity, database-driven site, any shared host would restrict you if you used too many resources -- but with the right of content, you can go far on these cheap plans.

Next time you want to make statements, try to back them up with facts and not silly guesswork, OK?

True, too many mysql resources and server-side operations should be restricted on shared hosts.

Thing is, I may want to use 5GB or more space but hardly any bandwidth as I wont have many visitors initially.

That's completely true. Some oversellers such as Dreamhost, Site5, etc. DO let you use your alloted resources as long as you're not causing high CPU/RAM usage.
