Server names?

How about "ChuckNorrisServerOfAwesomeness.yourdomain.com"?

Or "StevenSeigalRulez.yourdomain.com"

Server names can be literally anything you want. What do you expect to accomplish with this thread, exactly?

Popular server names are:

Star Trek
Planets
Animals
Ex-Husbands
.
.
.

I personally name all my shared and reseller hosting servers after snakes (Python, Cobra, Viper etc). My media servers dont get the luxury of a name lol.

Just call them whatever you want. Most people go for recognised names rather then say names out of thier favourite local television program.

In terms of popularity, id say names relating to the likes of Camelot and Star Trek are extremely popular within the industry.

Whilst fun names are all great I found there are real scability issues. AS such all of our servers are in the form of

service-serverno-location.vaserv.com

e.g.

vz-1-tx.vaserv.com (Virtuozzo, Server 1,Texas)

Makes life a lot easier

You can start in alphabetical order. Example Arthur, Banana, California

I prefer a naming convention instead of 'computer-readable'. ie, I've had or seen server groups named after gemstones, precious metals, towns (places I've lived), landscape features (at university - all local landmarks), birds (the sysadmin was a twitcher).

At work, the FM team named their workstations 'abcd12345d' and its a nuisance when you want to tell one from the other as they tend to blend into each other after a while. Unless you have a lot, 'nice' names are better. Especially if you decide to combine servers one day - your DNS server may share the mail server one day, what will you call it then?
