I am looking at what specifications of server I would need to prevent "MySQL too many connections" errors similar to the error below:

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Too many connections in /usr/home/www/usr/upkeep/usr/default/include/db.inc on line 88

One of my sites is receiving surges in traffic for brief moments when the site is advertised on TV. Shortly after, I am finding that due to the server load, this error is common.

Any advice?

set max connection to 1000 and further tweak your sql configuration.

You might check your current server usage and increase the max connections directive in your MySQL config.
