why do people reboot a box after an apache recompile
Hello all,
Why do some people reboot a box after an apache recompile? Is this a test? Is it necessary?
TIA,

Windows has detected that it is indeed installed on an x86 based system. Please refrain from trying to use this system for anything productive, or windows will be forced to restart. Oh, and yes, looking at the monitor *is* considered productive, now go play.

Infinite,
as a rule of thumb consider this: you should reboot a Unix system when:
- you recompile a new kernel
- you recompile a driver or, more generally, anything running at such a high privilege level, and it cannot be "hot-plugged" (I mean it's not a module )
Those are the only reasons I can think of why you would want to reboot.
Other than "my system is totally screwed-up and it will take less time to reboot than to manually reconfigure" of course...http://www.voilaweb.com - the Social Internet Toolbox.

a reboot isn't all that horrible. Sure you don't HAVE to reboot - but why not. I run a number of production servers at work which are rebooted on a semi-monthly basis. It only takes a couple of minutes to take them down and back up - and could make the difference between me going to work randomly at 3am and sleeping. =)
