WHS was doing some time changes during this post, it caused a a bit more confusion - some quite funny, makeing it seem like the answer came before the question.

yeah i was confused as well
I didn't realise .co.uk was so popular though, so I'm assuming that its the third most common suffix (after .com and .net)
Do the figures include domains that have been dropped?

I believe so. But best to have a look at the terms and conditions on the registrar of your choice's site.
