Wheres the Dreamhost advertising?

I've been looking around to see some the advertising alot of the companies do. I noticed alot of the very large host don't have ads running on search-engines, banner ads on sites like this etc.. For example, I have yet to find a DreamHost ad online but it baffles me how they can keep racking in those customers. It's hard to believe this is all word-of-mouth.

Well considering the size of their client base, word-of-mouth would bring home the bacon, big time, imo. Their extreme allocations of disk space and data transfer, also get folks talking too.

And their $97.00 dollar affiliate payouts don't hurt either.

I agree with Aussie Bob, but it would be interesting to know where they did advertise to get things rollings. I agree that affiliates probably had something to do with it.

For example I do not see ****** advertising around. I do know that they are very big on offering affiliates a lot of money and do a good job at managing affiliates to make sure they are happy.

Dreamhost posted a blog post a while back saying a lot of their success is due to their affiliates, they were one of the first companies to offer such a large payout and the coupon setup and custom control panel helped grow them quick. For that post just go to:
http://blog.dreamhost.com/2006/11/09...et-cheap-ps3s/

and watch the video on the very bottom.

****** is trying to come back since they have a horrible rep of turning their customers over to collection agencies and constantly emailing people to upgrade.

Or their affiliates did, I'd hate to say how many I have removed over 5 years from three forums. Some forums allow such things, so my measly few hundred would be well surpassed by those who sign up at a gazillion forums.

And I think this is their greatest marketing strength. There's a young and hip buzz around their site/blog, and their clients are probably mostly their age too.

Maybe there is hope for the U25s in the hosting biz.

I'd say it was a more geeky than hip buzz but you're right, it does help them market and build their cult.

The owners themselves hit somethingawful's forums pretty hard for quite a long while until their service became so shoddy not even unemployable linux bloggers considered a DreamHost account to be worth $2/mo. or whatever they go for.

Their service isn't that bad, they are a mass market shared host, stop expecting miracles and if you need uptime go to pair or a high end shard host
