Setting up a Dedicated Server for Vbulletin based site(s)

I will request for some tips (software side) to setup a dedicated server.
Prime usage of the server will be for vbulletin based forums only.

1. Choice of OS (please list down from to bottom) which is best to least, please mention atleast 5 OS.

2. How should you compile Apache/MYSQL/PHP
(any additional details for compilation)

3. Any additional tools (free or commerical) which can help smooth running of server for vbulletin based site(s).

Thanks.

1) CentOS 4 or 5

2) Hire a pro to do it for you - check rack911.com for example, otherwise it's will be never ending story for you.

I am planning for ES3-5140 Server from SErvint costs around 399 Us $ per month
http://www.servint.net/dedicated/details.php

With WHM/Cpanel Panel and additional backup services, might include hardware firewall as well.

Nice server ...

Might be a dumb question - but all their services are fully managed, so wouldn't you just get servint to do it?

Hey San-deep,
Looks like forums.techarena.in is already running with Vbulletin on ServInt servers. What kind of help are you looking for?

I would use an RPM based LAMP enviroment on CentOS. It will be easier long term to not have to deal with compiling for updates.

Depending on how busy the server gets, MySQL which vBulletin utilizes would really benefit from SCSI drives like 15k RPM ones.

For php try using http://pecl.php.net/package/APC for caching of the php scripts. Trust me it helps out alot!

Depending the size of your forum and depending of the number of simultaneous members online you want setup a server for the forum and another for it's database. We recommend Cent OS latest release. Consider replace Apache by LiteSpeed Web server.

Regards
