256mb 512mb? Vps

Is there a big difference to 256MB/512MB VPS solution Burstable to 1GB/2GB when dealing with low volume site.

Will response time increase much or just scalability?

There shouldn't really be much difference, if your hosting only one low volume site without a control there wouldn't be much difference, however control panels may be best getting a higher ram. This would depend on what control panel you would want to use as well.

I would have thought if you buy a 256MB VPS then ask your host if they could upgrade it to 512MB for a few hours they would do so, just so you can see if there is any benifit in upgrading.

It depends what you need it for. If you have idle low traffic sites 256MB is fine.

if you have 512MB instead of 256MB you can optimize mysql and apache to the point where youll gain some milliseconds on the load time, but if its low volume maybe thats not important

Using Virtouzzo is it easy for a VPS provider to temporarily bump up memory on a per instance basis? I am struggling with the same 256 vs 512 dilemma and that would be my ideal solution if it is easy for a host to do for a few hours. I was under the impression they would have to build a new instance etc. but I'm not familiar with how the underpinnings of a VPS setup works.

Response time isn't going to make much difference if you memory isn't the bottleneck. Find out if you can get better performance with different software like lighttpd/sqlite etc.

Off topic a little but, check network:

ping/tracert between different vps providers if you haven't already done so. This is where you can see real latency issues between providers.

Control Panel (CPanel, I know YUCK).

There will be about 5-6 sites, for about 100-1,000 hits/day initially. Hopefully to get that to around 1,000-5,000 over the next 6-12 months. It certainly is not a high volume site and will never be a million hits a day.

Right now it is 256MB burstable to 1GB with WiredTree, I haven't received the information yet on it but will see how it does once I get it. I can always upgrade if need to, but I am sure performance will be fine if there is not other bottlenecks.
