Need a new host!

Hi peeps!

I'm new here and got impressed with the help offered ... So had to register for getting some guidance myself...

One of sites is hosted at Brinkster and i am thinking of moving it to a new host... Someone with better support, stats details, customer community and most of all a live chat that actually works when u need it !!

Upon searching for Brinkster here, i came across this topic regarding the"60 day lock down" thingie (when someone tried to transfer a domain from brinkster)...

Upon whois, my website details show up as follows...

Domain Name: ********.COM
Registrar: WILD WEST DOMAINS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.wildwestdomains.com
Referral URL: http://www.wildwestdomains.com
Name Server: NS1.BRINKSTER.COM
Name Server: NS2.BRINKSTER.COM
Status: clientDeleteProhibited
Status: clientRenewProhibited
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Status: clientUpdateProhibited
Updated Date: 16-jul-2006
Creation Date: 29-apr-2005
Expiration Date: 29-apr-2007

Can anyone guide me as to what i am about to run into if i choose a host who can transfer my site for me?? Like Dreamhost or midPhase ??

How would Brinkster punish me if i try to transfer from them??

Im not a newbie when it comes to hosting but then im not a pro either...

Any help would be appreciated...

Who are they to punish you, Choose a host that seems to fit you. i would say to look around the forums and some sites to choose your host and then make a request to the host to transfer your site to their server. They would insist you to provide some details of your a/c. some of my personal recommandations....

It doesn't look like you've updated any registrant detail on the domain since 16-jul-2006 so you should be able to transfer with no problems.

Since Brinkster does offer Domain Registrations separate from their hosting packages, you don't necessarily even have to transfer the registration away from them to get another Web Host.

Most people get confused and think Hosting and Domain Registrations are 1 service, and have to be kept with the same company. This is entirely untrue. To change hosts, it's as simple as transferring your data to your new host, and then updating the Name Servers your domain points to at your domain registrar.

Cool

It depends on what you signed up for. Some hosts like us keep domain names separate from "packages" or other offers so nothing is "locked". Yours obviously is for one reason or another.
With some you get a "deal" like a free domain or free month hosting or some other special but you must stay for the time the "deal" specifies.

Example: If you got a "free domain with 6 months hosting" special you are probably obligated to at least pay for the 6 months hosting to get your domain if you wish to move.

Some hosts are pretty easy on these things and say you had 2 months left you just pay the 2 moths and you can have your name. However the worst I have seen was a company with a 1 year commitment who wanted to charge a customer $750 to get their domain name after 3 months!! Needless to say they decided to 'ride it out" there for 9 more months because they already had the name on their business cards and such.

You just need to check with your host and see what you agreed to (if you didn't real the fine print) when you signed up. There may be a fee or there may not and they will just "unlock" the name and let you move to another host. It all depends on what your agreement was with them.

Thats right. It would help to know if YOU registered your own domain through wildwest OR did you just register it through brinkster when getting the hosting pkg.?

i remember brinkster.com from years ago like around 8 years thay used to be a free hosting company like geo and fortune cities, thay all seem to do this if you registar a domain like with yahoo and have thre hosting account thay used to do everything to stop people moving there domains, stay away from hosts like that and fine yourself a good hosting provider

Yeah..... I've learnt a few lessons during my time with Brinkster... So am looking at Dreamhost and midPhase but my inclination is towards Dreamhost...

Thx for all your inputs but is there ever a "good" hosting provider???

Hosting Zoom seems to be good... Their "Clustered Failover" technology seems to be like mediatemple's grid server offering.... but less expensive!

Hosting Zoom's website somehow makes me feel that they r serious in what they offer and know what they r talking about... whereas Hostgator is just too busy and looks like they r more interested in making money than providing good service..... I know its a wrong way to judge but these r just the first impressions that i got from their websites!

Also chkd out WireNine... and added it to my list of options which in no particular order is:

Hosting Zoom
Dreamhost
midPhase
WireNine

HostingZoom's fail-over system is a bit different than (mt)'s gridserver. The fail-over system is really made for more uptime, not improved processing where (mt)'s system is for spreading load, etc.

Don't judge a book by its cover, they always say.

Personally, for my own peace of mind, I would just go with a separate company for my domain registering needs. (Historically speaking, lots of hosting company failures have resulted in havoc in the domain registering side of the business as well, with customers losing control over the domain and being unable to change hosts etc.) ~$10 per year is not that much to pay, really.

Thus, I would first do the domain transfer, before the current registration expires. Then change hosts.

You're very elegant in the way you put it. IMO they are two very different hosting solutions, both technically and in terms of potential advantages. Comparing them, is almost like comparing the proverbial apples and oranges. They're both round fruits, but otherwise are quite dissimilar.

I already use HFW for hosting my own portfolio site... I just renewed it a few weeks ago and i think $49.95 for a year is not bad... In the past year, there have been only two instances when their mail server was down but i didnt lose any business because of that!

Considering that i hardly use any of their available services, i find them okay... I just wish i had more mySQL databases at my disposal so that i could chk all the free php scripts/apps i get my hands on without creating a mess of just the 1 mySql db available by default ... But no major problems with HFW...

A few of my other business sites are hosted at Brinkster, one of which needs to be renewed soon... HFW doesnt come upto mark (price wise) for those sites as they require more disk space, traffic etc.. Hence im considering other options... I might just move from HFW as well, to a hosting company where i can host multiple (>10) domains under one account at almost the same cost as Brinkster!

Just chkd out itxdesign.com and they seem to be a bit pricey as compared to some others i have recently chkd... Haven't heard about them much either so i'll look into it...

Thx !

For these kind of things, I guess there are just two measures that can be applied:
1. Do good communication with your present company;
2. Do a research on the company you want to switch to; of course, posting a message on a dedicated forum is a good place to start, but you want might to check more web sites before getting to the final decision.

Best of luck!
