    Bandwidth Throttling

What is "bandwidth throttling", and why do hosts do it?

    What is it:

Limiting the max amount of bandwidth at any given time for a customer/connection/server/site etc.

    Why some hosts do it:

Say if you sell someone 320gb of bandwidth a month, if they use that connection consistantly at 1mbps for the month, they are using their 320gb and you are paying for 1mbps of connection to sell them.

If they are using that connection in spurts, sometimes at .1mbps and sometimes at 30mbps, you then have to have 30mbps in available overhead bandwidth for them to use, which is signifigantly more costly for the provider.
