Question

What can I get for 300$ a month?

Hello

As title says I have 300$/month to spend on dedicated server and I need unmetered bandwidth. So what can I get (and most importantly from where) for this amount?

I appreciate any input you can give me.

I assume you are looking for a dedicated unmetered line? Should be able to get a good AMD or Xeon system with a few gigs of ram and a decent hard drive setup.

What are you looking at hosting?

It's doable...you're not going to be getting premium bandwidth, but $300 can actually get you pretty far.

Where?

If it is as doable as you say then surely you know where to buy it at.

I am looking for dedicated setup to host websites only, but high traffic ones so I need at MINIMUM dedicated 10mbps unmetered line.

Most important for me is ram and cpu. For hdd I dont need much more then 40gig.

P.S. Oh and I manage my server myself from ssh so I dont need cpanel etc. All I need is debian unstable and ssh access

You can get a nice dual core dual xeon or some nice AMD hardware for under $300 with 10Mbps unmetered dedicated connection.

Contact softlayer.com, they should be able to accommodate your needs

FDC can give you what you're looking for, but due to recent network problems I'm probably going to cancel my box there.

They're fairly reliable but you get what you pay for.

Check out Gnax as well. They have dual opterons on 10mbit around $230ish/mo. Dedicated ports of course.

FDC's network is back to normal and actually faster than it was before. I've heard they were having slight issues with WVFiber, but those should have been cleared up by now. I wouldn't cancel if I were you.

$350 at iWeb gives you:
  • Xeon Dual-Core Dempsey 2.67Ghz
  • 2GB RAM, 320GB IDE, No Mirroring
  • 10Mbps Unmetered
  • Level 1 Management
  • Remote Reboot
not bad

http://iweb8.com/dedicated/unmetered-servers/

if you want 100mbps port your price jumps up $1600

You'd be better off going with the 10mbps unmetered, then upgrading ot a metered connection on a 100mbps port, or just paying the overages

I'd have to say softlayer or FDC as well

Stay away from FDC they are the sad side of un-metered hosting. Check out softlayer.com, for $100 addition to any server you get 10Mbps, and they have very decent hardware starting at $159, so for $259 you could be very happy, and have a premium network...
