Hello WHT members I wanted to know if there are many people out there that are using Dedicated hosting to host Asterisk. I have a project that would need that I would have to host and run a Asterisk server the server would have to be a little beefy (that’s why I don’t think I can use a VPS hosting) I am looking to have 10 channels with up to 10 concurrent calls.

Beachcomber.net seems to have some good servers P4 2.4 with 2 gig of ram for about $99 as this was sort of the config I was looking for (maybe a little stronger processor but the ram is I think is the main part I think that I need to have a look in to depending on the codec used)

So if any one has some experience of hosting a Asterisk server off site please let me know.

10 channels is nothing, I've run hundreds of standing sessions on similar box. See http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/A...k+dimensioning for rough estimates of hardware capabilities.

yes I know 10 channels is nothing so your box is of the same spec could you tell me how many current calls it supports and what the CPU load is on a heavy day I am lookign for no more than about 60% CPU useage.

Plus also looking for a provider as well at the moment I feel that it is the memory that counts the most when picking a server for Asterisk.

We provide VoIP service to business customers and do so with asterisk, we have load balanced dell servers with P4 2.8Ghz HT processors and during peak usage each node is handling around 100-120 concurrent calls with almost no load.

so as others have said, you don't need much in the way of hardware, figure 30Mhz of CPU per call.

With a P4 2.4 GHZ and a 2Gig RAM, I don't think you would have any problem carrying 10 phones. Our previous server with a 2.4 ghz celeron and a 1gig ram didn't experience any problem till the 20th caller was hired.

What do you think about the G.729 codec, are you using it with 100-200 calls? Don't you think it is a CPU power eater...

I manage several trixbox servers some on 2GHz P4 and some on xeons. They dont really need the xeons. I have some with 5 phones and some with up to 50 phones. I dont think the Xeons were needed but I wanted Raid 1 and those were the only 1U servers we had with scsi raid built on board. P4s seem to work great for asterisk servers....


I dont think on any of the boxes I have actually used the maximum concurrent calls. I believe the most current calls at one time has been around 10 - 15 at most.

Reading above I see some say they have had 100 concurrent calls an a 2.8 P4. I know teliax has built its business on asterisk and so have many other VOIP companies!

well you can try changing voice codecs as well. if ur useing g729 codec it can consume a very low bandwidth. In asterisk however you may need to purchase codec license from digium (10$/channel).
