Maximum amount of players on Dedicated Servers??
Hi for an average dedicated server with 2GB RAM does any one know what would be the maximum amount of players connected at one time
that the server cauld handle before it starts lagging????
this is for the counterstrike game
would it be just 1 counter strike server with just 30 people connected ??
or cauld it handle about 5 counter strike servers with about 150 people connected ??

Hey, your details for the server are very vague, maybe some more specs would be helpful, ie. cpu and bandwith. I have ran a 16 slot counter strike server on a server with only 64mb of ram, very laggy, then upgraded to 256mb of ram and made a big difference. So please provide some more information and I will try and help you out.

Alrite, well im not a genius with this, but with those specs you should be able to run 5 servers, 20 slot, so maybe 4 if your looking for a 32 slot server, the big thing that is going to get you is bandwith, you need to have a good connection to run that many servers without lag.

It depends on what settings your going to be running.
Are these CS 1.6 or CSS?
Are they +sys_ticrate 1000 or 100? (or -tickrate 33 ->100 for source)

on an average setup, your RAM determines how many servers you can run at once, your processor determines how many players are connected at any one time. I dont have any experience with actually hosting games on a server, but I did manage to set up 18 servers on a P4 machine with 2GB DDR3200 RAM wich filled it up. I cant tell you the quality of the servers that it was running, just that there were 18. I'd probly say cut that number in half for a decent individual server performance.

Man with those specs you could host a considerable amount of servers (slot) I would say 8x 32 slots servers. But don't forget that its practically impossible that all of them will be full at the same time. A 32 players server with some plugins doesnt use more than 160 -200 mb of ram. Dont forget that the connection your server is connected to matters as well. Good luck

Lag - depends on the network its conected to :p
Before it starts to hit ram/processing limits - well, we have a client with a lower spec box than your (2*2.4xeon, 4Gb ram) running 12*32slot 66tick cs 1.6 with no issues at all , so if you stick another couple of gb in and your higher processor speeds, i'd say 18

Adding more ram does no good if your other sub-systems cannot keep up with the demand. Your single cpu server is a good machine but it won't have the capacity of the higher end Dual systems.
Running more then 6-8 decent size servers on that machine is about the limit if you are intending to keep everyone happy. You could get away with more but if they all start filling up you will have problems.
In comparison we run 8-10 game servers off our 2x Dual Woodcrests with good results.

Same Same. But we aren't hosting pubs, mostly private 11-12 slots.

I'd say with the specs you have given out, you could run about 4 to 5 servers. But it still depends on your bandwidth as stated on some previous posts.
