My top 7 VPS providers...
Hello everyone,
I want to move our PHP/MySQL web-app to a VPS. Traffic is generally low, put at peaks we get 400+ users logging in at the same time (within a couple of minutes).
Our 3 key factors are:
1. UPTIME
2. UPTIME
3. UPTIME
4. SUPPORT
(...so dont aks me why we are still with Mediatemple, their grid has been an absolute nightmare, but thats another story)
Based on all the info here I came up with the following short list:
1. PowerVPS
2. ServInt
3. MyriadNetwork
4. LiquidWeb
5. Spry
6. KnownHost
7. modVPS
Would you guys agree? What would your list be?
Cheers,
Mat

I've only had one VPS and it's with ServInt(#2 on your list). So far, they have exceeded all expectations in terms of reliability and performance.

Two questions; two answers:
1) Would you guys agree? A: Why not? They're still in business and have attracted your favor.
2) What would your list be? A: None of the above
Ultimately of course, you're responsible for your own decision on this. So just make it; and change it if necessary. There's at least as much bad advice here as good.
Welcome to VPS.

I have also been looking for a VPS and here are the ones I am considering now. In no particular order.
RapidVPS
Futurehosting
ModVPS
Surfspeedyservers
Found this site with some info on actual VPS account performance. You can see Spry is a little lacking in some areas. web-hosting.domaintools.com/a/vps-hosting

Maynard,
"So just make it; and change it if necessary."
that approach is exactly what I want to avoid - Id like to learn out of other peoples mistakes, and thats where this forum is priceless.
Moving a complex web-app, all the user data, changing DNS and all of that with the least disruption is a decision I dont want to take lightly and something I want to be doing as seldomly as possible!
" 2) What would your list be? A: None of the above "
Why? Are you a provider yourself or have you had a bad experience with ALL of them?
Cheers,
Mat

You really won't be able to find out everything you possibly can and pick your "perfect" host by just reading through threads here. You have a very solid list. Maybe you will be able to narrow down your list a bit. But you won't know which one truly suits your needs/expectations until you try them. Yeah its a hassle, but the more you read in here the more you'll second guess all the choices that sounded great a few minutes before.

I just thought it was interesting site. Not to suggest Spry is BS. The difference in those graphs is not much if you mouse over the top to get the %.

what I meant is that it looks like that site is not independent, they are affiliates of all the providers they recommend ...

When asked what provider one should use, typically people post the providers they like/have used and the thread becomes a popularity contest. Why not take your list and email the sales department of each host and rate them on the speed and content of their reply. When you are satisfied with the hosts whos sales departments meet your needs, try emailing their support and see how quickly they respond. When you've narrowed your list further, search web hosting talk for the remaining hosts and see if you can find some qualitative reviews on those hosts. While WHT is a great resource, there is no replacing direct communication with your prospective hosts to determine who will meet your needs.
Good luck!

This is the best advice I've seen on WHT in a long time. Do what the man says; actually talking to the hosts you're interested in will give a much better idea of what they have to offer you.

Solid advice from HawkeViper. I would add that if you have the time and budget get an account with whoever is still on your short list and play around with them for a few months. Best way to get a solid feel for the service and support.
