Moving Out For University
Hello all,
I'm in a bit of a sticky situation. I'm currently in my first year of an Accounting degree at the University of Liverpool. I live a 1 hour drive from Liverpool (including the 20 minute walk from where I have to park).
I know two people on my course from my old college and that's mainly who I talk to on a daily basis.
However, I've got a choice if I want to move out next year or not. I've found the accommodation I'd like to live in if I move out but there's only one room left so I have to decide today or it will be taken tomorrow. I can just about to move out, however I might need to use my overdraft as a backup - just in case. If I do move out I will come home at the weekends to get things washed and things like that.
Considering the fact that no one really knows each other on the course at the moment, the distance from my home to the University, the possible social factors and new experiences such as attempting to learn to cook, what would you recommend? Stay at home or move out?
I understand at the end of the day it's my decision but I'd love to know some experiences people have had with moving out and some one may bring up something I've missed when making my decision.
Thanks.

I moved out and never looked back. I don't regret the decision. I made new friends learned new skills and what not. However, no two people are alike. If you feel that staying at home is a good choice for you than by all means stay at home. It can be difficult to find a reliable roommate that pays their rent on time and is someone you can live with. Don't take this as automatic. I know a lot of people that moved in with friends and it ruined their friendship.

I'll defiantly be moving out after University, because I'll have the money to do that thanks to my job. My course is only 3 years long, and I'm in to the final 7 weeks of my first year.

Boils down to money... what does your "bank account" say?
Factor in the extra expenses of moving out, food, bills, etc... but with that drive, maybe you can cut down on some gas money... I know gas is still high in england...
You don't want the added stress of a financial situation on your back while in school....
I've been to liverpool a couple of times... nice place to party.

The most amazing experience you'll have. Nothing like growing up a bit + you're going to have a lot more freedom.

Challenge yourself. If it's not going to leave you destitute, then take the leap. At worse, it doesn't work out too well and in a year's time, you can go back home. But at least give yourself the opportunity to try.

Why would you possibly move out. When I went to get my first degree. I stayed at home. Free Food, No Rent, No laundry, Free Internet, No Cleaning, and No work. Now i moved out and work. I am going back to college to get another degree. I would stay home. It is less stuff to deal with.

I agree with skiz. Stay at home as long as you can.

My bank account is happy living at home.
If you choose to stay home, maybe think about saving any money you save towards a condo or an apartment when you do graduate from college.

I live in Liverpool
I see a lot of students renting on Smithdown road. Good parking, lots of students with house parties and the road is full of restaurants and takeaways. Asda and Aldi are both close by too.
Moving into a house is a big step, so you should make sure you know the habits of others and move in with some good friends which you have things in common with.. It's a good experience.. But nothing beats the halls!

Its not all about money (shock and horror to most here!) being independant is a huge part of growing up. you have to do it, university when everyone is in the same boat is the best time to do it. Socially it would be a real shame to miss out on.

College becomes so much more exciting when you're away from home. That way you realise the worth of home even more and its a great experience....
