Web host gave me server with PHP4, what about PHP5?

Hey all,

I just noticed my server has php4 apache modules installed, but since PHP5 exists, is it not better to have it instead of 4?

However you cannot have PHP5 and PHP4 supprt at the same time, unless I run one of them as CGI. Is there a way to uninstall all PHP4 related apache files and replace them with php5, or pehaps just update it?

Thanks!

If it is a dedicated server then of course you can replace PHP4 with PHP5, given that you know how.

If it is a managed server, you can ask your host to do that for you. Else, hire a management company to help.

If it's Centos, you can upgrade by enabling the centos plus repositories in yum, or through the atomicrocketturtle.com repositories. Both require an addition to yum.conf

... and if it's a FreeBSD server, install PHP via ports (pkg_add). If you're not familiar with that, check out FreeBSD's manual -- it's very informative!

Good luck!
