Looking for a Server for File Hosting
Hello,
I host a fansite for a radio show and I've got some questions about publicly hosting an archive of mp3s.
There would be about 130 mp3 files, average size 50mb.
I've written some questions below but if there's anything else you think I should know, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
----------
How much would it cost?
Do you know any companies that provide such a service?
Does straight file downloading effect server RAM in the same way a dynamic php site does, or is the main concern bandwith?
Does anyone know of any software that I could use to put limits on the downloads, such as only allowing one download at a time?

No, they're old radio shows from a local station. No illegality involved.

Old does not mean that they are legal to play them. To be on the safe side, contact the radio station in question and get their explicit consent before proceeding.

Haha, I assure you they're legal!
But if I only had somewhere to host them...

If you are looking for pure downloads and streaming then any hosting account should do the trick. Downloads of MP3 or of any files is not CPU intensive and does not have much impact on RAM.
I supposed you be looking at something which offers a lot of bandwidth and control, perhaps a dedicated server would be better apt for your needs. If you are using Linux, you could use Mod_throttling or if you want to restrict the number of simultaneous downloads, perhaps a file hosting script should help you in that area.http://www.batchimage.com - Offering Batch Image Processing and TIFF/PDF Software Solutions

Brilliant, that's just the kind of advice I was after.
I don't suppose you know of any pre-existing file hosting scripts, just so I can get an idea?

Illegal or not, our company's terms and agreements state that we are not responsible for what our clients post. It states it more in legal terms of course. And yes if the content of the account becomes a problem we will delete the hosting account based on the agreements the client won't remove it. It isn't our job to research everything hosted on our servers to make sure it is legal or not. We simply can't catch everything.

Well, I have no experience about file hosting but you can visit http://www.hotscripts.com and search for 'file hosting'. Most scripts allows for both upload and download of files. However, you could probably alter the script to disallow uploads and just do the download.
In theory, you probably might be looking for a Rapidshare clone or the likes.http://www.batchimage.com - Offering Batch Image Processing and TIFF/PDF Software Solutions
