Opteron or Pentium D question

Hi

My friend is thinking of trying a softlayer server. We are trying to figure out which is better for a Windows Server. Opteron or Pentium D

He is busy in Google reading and Softlayer suggested this site to him and since I am registered I ask for him.

He has had other windows servers before but never used anything other than intel and nothing with the power of softlayers offerings. Any advise for us would be great since the Prices are the same and they have a special now for the HDD

Pentium D / Xeon 3000 Series

Processors: 930, 950, 3060
2 x 2MB Cache
1GB DDRII 533 / 667 ECC RAM

OR

Opteron 100 Series
• Processors: 170, 175, 180
2 x 1MB Cache
1GB DDRI 400 ECC RAM

Thanks

Eddie

Pentium D run hot and aren't that great.

I would definately go for the opteron or Xeon 3000.

I'v got an opteron170 in 1 of my home pcs. Its a great processor . But for 20$ more you can get the Single Processor Dual Core Xeon 5050 - 3.0 GHz (Dempsey) - 2 x 2MB cache w/ HT

Which (imo) is a good difference with the Xeon 3060

Xeon 3060 at $159/mth is a good one. The $99 one-time setup for the 3060 outperforms the 930 by a very large margin. I have 930 and 3060, just regretted that I didn't upgrade 930 to 3060 for the other server.

No idea about 5050 nor the Opteron though.

Thanks for the replies. I totally missed the setups, I will let him know. I am pretty sure hes looking for which is better between the Pentium D 930 or the Opteron 170. I know he is on a budget and took a while to try softlayer but he is very excited since he reads nothing but good. I have used the Pentium D 930 but never tried an Opteron

Thanks again

Ed

Well the Pentium D and the Opteron 170 were released at the time AMD > Intel... Also those Pentium D ships never been really good CPUs.
