Question

Looking for a good host ...

I'm looking for a web host for under $20 a month, and at least 20GB of space and at least 250GB monthly bandwidth. I also need to be able to run vBulletin 3.6.4 (some hosts dont allow it because of its excessive use of resources). I was looking at westhost and powweb, but after read their reviews, i'm not touching them.

Any suggestions?

Hello

Yes it is very possible but I guess about the Vbulletin featues it may scare some resellers etc with limited space and bandwidth.
To fit you specific needs I say this should be talked with your provider previous buying or doing any contract, so you can be aware. Asking them to create or to set an specific plan to suit your needs is a good start.

Regards!

Tlgst Maurice

it also depends on how active your forum is...

I agree with bullion, discuss with your possible host prior to sale

lots of offers in the offers section

if you can increase your budget just a little ...try looking for vps or reseller hosting too

How come such high bandwidth? 100gb would normally do a forum unless its massive.

Have a look at piccles.com they provide good advice for everything to do with hosting. I found their site most useful (and they weren't selling anything!). hope this helps.

Its not for a forum per se, the forum is just mostly for the back-end. It will mainly be a gallery site (lots of images).

How big are your forums? How many simultaneous database connections? Most web hosting companies have a limit of 25 maximum connections.

20GB disk space and 250GB+ transfer... you should raise your budget, not under $20/month

sounds like you don't really NEED as much space or transfer as your asking for...which makes me feel almost ANY shared, reseller or vps plan in your budget would work.

I'm taking extra space and bandwidth because my site will need it in the future and i dont want to end up paying extra $$$ because i went over my bandwidth limit. Basically, im thinking ahead.

Anyone ever dealt with Vexxhost? They have the bandwidth/disk space i need and they're cheap to boot.

Also, whats the difference between shared hosting and virtual hosting?

[MyIS] Jordan : I think how many users you will have browsing your forum and gallery will be quite an important factor in what sort of host you'll need

if it's just the 1 or 2 people per day... probably almost any host will be able to handle the usage.

but that changes a lot when the number of users increase.

whether you can get by with a high quality shared hosting plan or will need VPS or dedicated will depend on the number of users.

My buddy runs http://rockysrubberroom.com/forum/ (vBulletin v3.5.7) with HostGator's Swamp plan.

Currently has around 35 users online and 10 guests... "Most users ever online was 347 on Dec 01, 2006." not sure how that would compare to your predicted usage, and I'm not familiar with how vB v3.6.4 compares to v3.5.7....

My site is also currently hosted by HostGator, received over 10,000 pageviews on Saturday: http://josiemaran-world.com/gallery/ and moves around 6GB of data per day

I moved to hostgator on Friday due to the increasing popularity of my site recently thanks to a much improved google ranking, and some small problems with the previous host. http://josiemaran-world.com/misc/wooot.gif

There are probably many other hosting plans which can provide what you need, but I'd personally recommend HostGator as a quality shared hosting plan, judging from various friends' experience with them as well as my recent experience after moving to their server.
