General question about multiple CPUs

I am in the process of shopping for a web server. My question is what would be better, a server with quad 1Ghz XEONs or a server with two 2.6 Ghz XEONs?

What model Xeons are you looking at putting in?

What are you going to use this server for? Web server, database server, or storage server?

It turns out that these are 1.6Ghz so I am think that that is going to be pretty damn fast.

CPU performance is not solely based on processing speed. What model Xeons are you comparing?

In fact, CPU speed is hardly an indicator of speed anymore.

The quad 1.6Ghz is probably a clovertown CPU. This would definitely be my choice, the extra cores are able to handle load better. One peaking process will not influence other processes that run on other cores, which makes the overall performance more smooth.

I actually highly doubt that. I don't think he means quad-cores, but rather quad single-core Xeons.

For a Apache, PHP, and MySQL server, my choice would be two 2.6 Ghz Xeons. Since you're contemplating between a quad 1 Ghz Xeon ( 4 CPUs each with 1.0 Ghz) or two 2.6 Ghz Xeons, I would venture to guess that these are 1.0 Ghz Xeons are very old Xeons. Thus I would go with two 2.6 Ghz Xeons thinking those are newer models. But without knowing exactly what flavor of Xeons you're going to go with, it's hard to make an informed decision. If knowing the exact Xeon codename, i.e. Nocona, Paxville, Sossaman, Dempsey, Woodcrest, Tulsa, Clovetown, or Xeon 3000-series, it will much easier to decide.
