cpanel uses alot of cpu but is always worth it in the end
webmin is free, seems rubbish and zpanel and vchs are better free alternatives.

go with cpanel.
everyone uses it.
and everyone likes it.

Please elaborate on how Webmin is, in your opinion, rubbish? Especially if you've used it... I'd say it is quite the opposite of rubbish when used for its what appears to be its intended purpose (managing a single UNIX box or group of UNIX boxes for an individual or company that is not offering shared hosting). I have not used Virtualmin which would be the addon to Webmin to be able to use it for providing shared hosting so I can't comment on that.

cPanel is very popular and is geared toward hosting companies and Webmin is geared toward systems administrators looking to manage machines and allow users to manage certain aspects of their accounts like email, etc but not so much toward hosting companies. In my opinion you are comparing apples and oranges but there are people successfully using Webmin for their hosting companies if I recall correctly.

Well the difference is that one is free (webmin) and one is paid (cPanel). Webmin is also geared towards server administration while cPanel is designed specifically for web hosting. You really do get what you pay for in this case.

If you're just hosting some sites webmin might not be a bad choice. If you're planning on running a hosting company, then go the cPanel route. cPanel tends to be a bit harsh on a VPS (particularly lower end resources) so that's why I say what I do. Webmin is also probably more for the experienced hand when it comes to server administration (VPS) since you'll need to do more when it comes to account creation and so forth when relatively compared to cPanel.

If I could hazard a suggestion, and your host of choice offers it, DirectAdmin is something that I'd recommend taking a look at because it's lighter than cPanel but still does the job quite well.

Firstly, webmin is NOT rubbish. It excels in system administration, and has plugins for many applications, great when trying to change settings, restart services, etc. without logging into SSH.
It appears CPanel CANNOT do this.

CPanel is not an ideal choice for people with linux administration knowledge, and not intending to offer hosting.
It eats RAM (literally) and is known to be wasteful in resources.
It is not wise to get CPanel for a couple of sites unless you must have a GUI.
