It doesn't matter much. I use Thunderbird and GMail. Like them both.

I've fallen in love with Pocomail.. after trying Thunderbird, Opera and Outlook..
It's fast, it's simple and it gets the job done. It's however, not free. Maybe why it's less popular.

I originally used Outlook. But after a few thousand emails, it was sluggy slow as hell. Lots of people told me that Thunderbird could handle that amount with no problem. That's a lie, unfortunately.
I needed a client that can handle thousands of legitimate (incoming) emails on a monthly basis, without taking 10 minutes to open one email. GMail did the trick. And Ive stuck with it since I was invited into beta.

Outlook Express. Been using it for almost 10 years. Tried all the rest and hated them.

I have to use Outlook since its the only one that works properly with our email system. I have not yet seen any problems with it that people describe; my average inbox size is 2.5 GB.
You should give Outlook 2007 a try. I was impressed by it over 2003.
Others that I have used in the past:
Thunderbird -- great; but not without its quirks. Spam filter is quite good.
The Bat! -- had some unique features; haven't used it in a few years.
Pocomail -- also very good
Incredimail -- run, run, run far far far away from it. I have a user that insists on using this piece of sh*t software and believe me its only cause for trouble

I am using Outlook since it got introduced, never had any bug or problem. I liked it's PST (backup) facility, task manager, calendar and many features. Can backup anything and can take it anywhere with my thumb drive. There was a problem with pst password, but sorted out now. And I can sync it with my cell too. That's great.

Using Thunderbird 1.5 and never had any problem.
27 accounts installed with tens of thousand of emails in folders (total of 5+ GB).
The trick is, you should never use the default folder in Thunderbird.
