Hi,
My webhost (asmallorange) has told me that my website's traffic is too much for shared hosting; and recommends me to upgrade to a VPS.
I need to run the following:
1. cPanel
2. Ruby on Rails
3. oscommerce (high traffic website).
What specifications should I go for.
Any recommendations on where to get a reliable managed VPS would be much appreciated as well.

Why be restricted by the loads placed bo 10 or 20 other server users. If yo have high volume, woudl you not be better off geting a dedicated server or hosting your own somewhere? You will not be restriced by what anyone else does then!
Regards,
J

A dedicated may be the best way to go based on your needs. My 2 cents.

You should ask how high exactly is your traffic.
Some hosts using suExec can give you the CPU and RAM usage of your sites.

I'm not sure if "a reliable managed VPS" really exist...Various web hosting companies are offering managed VPS, but I saw not yet any total managed VPS. If you are running ecommerce I suggest a dedicated server with 1G BRAM, two HDD in raid and a reliable external backup with FTP access and also a SSH encryption. VPS runs fine, like a server, but have problems with swap file and is not the ideal for ecommerce.

Dedicated servers will be managed better than VPSes.
However, such a high spec-ed machine is much more expensive than VPSes.
Moreover, VPSes run on better hardware.
Reliable managed VPSes do exist, check around as there are quite a few.
To reduce RAM usage, you can dump Apache for something else lighter.

Cpanel is a bit bloated you could opt for a lighter control panel, and dump apache for something else like light-httpd. It is possible to get a managed VPS, but usually most of those will have the same restrictions on bandwidth as a higher end shared package. In such cases you would need to look towards a "Premium VPS" service where you can get more bandwidth, but the costs will be near a small dedicated. Can you specify how much bandwidth you were using and will need? If you can give us a ballpark we may be able to give you better advice tailored to what you actually require.

I am being told that I am using over 30% of server resources. I am not even sure if its technically possible.
