Which dedicated server for... ?
I tried a VPS at mydomain.com but due to inability to even get java running without bumping into the virtual limitations i decided that a dedicated server is probably better for my needs.
So i'm looking for a dedicated server within a budget of 75$/month.(realistic?)
with approx. following specs:
minimum 512mb ram
Reasonable processor capable of running apache webserver+java+tomcat+mysql+subversion
1 IP(more would be nice)
Decent bandwidth from Europe
Use will be mainly personal:
- small static website for my company
- backup of some personal files
- subversion for my java projects
- java webstart application
- java servlets with mysql
Maybe in the future i will host other websites for other companies, so would be nice if i can upgrade at some point to a bigger server at the same provider.
Thanks

1 database with not more than 10-15 tables for just some basic insert, update, delete operations. No complex SQL statements.
The java servlets will be just for querying and updating the mysql database.
No plans for heavy processing

If your alright with managing a box by yourself, you might want to checkout layered tech. They have pretty decent pricing, with a few different configurations that fit with your budget. I'd check with them on the peering to Europe just to make sure, I can't remember where they sit with that aspect.

Hello. I think that you should increase your budget or go with VPS. It seems that VPS will be able to suit your needs first time.

yes, i want to manage the box myself
I just looked at LayeredTech, looks pretty decent.
Starting from the 70$/month deal, what options would you recommend ?
I guess the 100Mbps uplink options is a must have ? (can i upgrade this option later on? )
Or should i go for the Athlon based server ?(over my inital budget but could be considered, as this probably is not option you can easily upgrade afterwards )
Thanks

hmm, VPS hasn't been a good experience to me. And the 70$/month deal at LayeredTech seems to fulfill my needs at first glance.

I second DPI's recommendation of LayeredTech -- I had been about to recommend them even before reading his post. I've currently only dealt with a reseller of their servers, but have been planning to rent a server directly from them for some time now. They should have some specials as cheap as $59/month added any day now (they add new ones all the time).
I'd save money and see how much bandwidth you'll be using before getting a 100 Mbit port -- you can always add one later.
Also, their European peering seems to be pretty good (I say this only based on their website; though, I was with the reseller I mentioned for a few months, and I didn't get any complaints from European visitors).
(I'm going to stop using the Quick Reply box; that's the second time I've lost a post I was typing in it and look how many posts I have here!! Aargh.)

Does anyone have a public website hosted on a LayeredTech dedicated server, preferably where i can download a file ?
So i can get a feeling of the speed from Europe.
Thanks

Not a website -- the guy I manage the server for didn't pay the bill so his sites have been suspended by the reseller through which he bought the server (oddly enough the ssh account I made for him works and mine doesn't....) -- but I put a test file up here for you:
http://72.36.167.6/~wildcard/data100MB.zip
The server's upload speed, if you're curious:
Code:
wildcard@alpha$ wget http://www.lunarpages.com/speedtest/data100MB.zip
--06:58:26-- http://www.lunarpages.com/speedtest/data100MB.zip
=> `data100MB.zip'
Resolving www.lunarpages.com... done.
Connecting to www.lunarpages.com[209.200.229.4]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104,858,112 [application/zip]
100%[====================================>] 104,858,112 1.58M/s ETA 00:00
06:59:34 (1.58 MB/s) - `data100MB.zip' saved [104858112/104858112]

Thanks! I really appreciate that
Started of at 250KB/sec but then it slowed down to 180KB/sec and now at 200KB/sec. Which is more than enough for my needs

Glad to be of assistance
Typically, my speeds stay around 300~350 KB/s. (I'm in Kentucky, and the datacenter's in Texas.)

I think that 75$/month it is semi-dedicated service only.
