External HD to Fileserver?
I currently have a Lacie 500 GB Big Disk external hard drive. I would like to find a way to share this hard drive with all the computers on my network. I understand that the computer that is plugged in will have to be on in order for me to access the hard drive. I am currently using a Linksys wireless network system.
Well you could use Windows File and Printer Sharing, but the easiest way would probably to set up an FTP server on that machine. Then anyone on the network could connect and download/resume files.
If you want to just use Windows, right-click the drive and go to Sharing and Security. Tell it you understand the security risks and want to share the folder.
If you want to use an FTP server, check Download.com for good reviews. Install one and configure it to share your drive. You can then create a user account to login.
I ended up downloading software from downloads.com...very fast install and free! It is working exactly like I wanted.

Oh yes good idea...
http://www.serv-u.com/....however this software is different than what I mentioned in my original post. That software (free) wasn't really as it was described.
Theres a step by step tutorial for setting up a home ftp server at http://lifehacker.com/software/top/h...ver-130806.php
I personally use apache + PHP 5 (XAMPP) to host a file management script that i wrote.
Been working for me for about 5 years, and my entire family can sync their schedules.
