It is kinda vague question. If you collect credit card info you are required to use SSL in some form.

    My question is not vague.
Either you know about OpenSSL or you don't.

I am a full time web developer.
I manage several shopping cart programs.
I was wondering if it's worth of studying OpenSSL.

    Thank you.

openssl is just a program that helps in managing ssl certificates. Unless you plan on self signing your certificates, You will need to get your certificates signed by a trusted authority.

Good for you, but I still do not know what is it you need.

    - Genral info about openSSL - go to their website.

    - If you need a SSL certificate and you do not understand why do you need it and what it is for - do ask.

    - If you are trying to have your shopping cart communicate with some third party over secure connection - do ask and if you do, do make sure you specify platform you use.

Eventually you will understand why I said your question is vague.
