I am trying to work this out and wondered if someone could help me, basically I have a splash page which gives the site requirements etc, but I only want it to be showed to the visitor once, i.e. so when they re-visit they do not have to view the splash page and are re-directed to the main site.
Does anyone have any advice they could give me? Or any recommendations for the PHP script?
I thought I would point out that the solution above will only work so long as the same person uses the same computer and has cookies enabled. Also the splash screen will show when they clear the cookies (which some people do on a regular basis).
Getting the ip address will help the cookie problem, but not everyone has an static ip address. Granted most people with DSL and cable connections are loaned IP address for a period of time. Therefore, the ip address fix will only work so long as your vistors have static ips or until their loaned ip address from their ISP has expired. Also, ISPs are now putting their clients behind NAT routers (since we have already run out IP addresses), meaning that the ip address you get from $REMOTE_ADDR is the ip of who knows how many people. Another issue is that insitutions also use NAT routers. There is really no full-proof solution. For most people the cookie option should work. I would not both with IPs, as they are less reliable.
