I have been waiting for a .com domain to expire for some months now. The domain in question I will keep to myself, but it expires on the 30th of this month, at 00:00.
Now every single time I have accessed the domain in the past 4 - 5 months, I have received a Listing Denied error, I have tried to contact the e-mail address on the whois, and the usual admin, postmaster, webmaster e-mail addresses, but to no avail (I got the usual no user at this domain errors). Also, the exact same person owns the .net equivalent of the domain too, which again expires at the exact same time.
I want to get this domain, I feel no guilt in trying to nab it the second it becomes available because as near as I can tell its just a neglected domain name...
But my question is, what is the best way of backordering a domain? I know GoDaddy offer a domain backordering service, but I am a little confused as to how it works. They wish to charge $18.95, if I proceed through the rest of the signup process does it mean they will take the $18.95 NOW and if the domain becomes available, then they buy it and give it to me at no extra cost? Or does it mean they charge me $18.95 and then alert me when its available and allow me to purchase it further?
Also, are there "cooldown" times when a domain expires (i.e. a set amount of between the domain expiring and it actually becoming available, so to give the current owner a chace the renew)?
What are the best companies to use for these kind of things? I don't think anyone else is interested in this domain, but what company will literally register the domain the very instant (or near enough) it becomes available for me?
All my other domains are hosted with UKReg right now, and as far as I can see they don't do a backordering service...
P.S. for the record, I want the domain for a legitimate project I'm working, I have no intention of selling or auctioning the domain(s)...
gem3.com I beleive offers a similar service of backordering domains. I think they charge $19.95 , don't quote me but I think that includes the one year Reg fee along with the monitoring, backordering service. Try reading all the terms @ gem3 and godadddy, they usually tell you exactly what you are paying for and whats included in the price.
