accessing ports on web hosting service

I want to write a client/server program using .net remoting where the client and server communicate over TCP channels as opposed to using HTTP. I could probably open up whatever port on my firewall, but would trying to talk to a port on the server be a waste of time? I want to use remoting/TCP instead of web services because it is faster and no one else will be using it but me.

That should work, I don't see any problem with it as long as you have control of both ends - you should ask your host if you don't have control of the server.

Keep in mind that whenever you open additional ports and have additional listeners, there can be security risks.
