Thread: FreeBSD SMP on?

  1. #1

    FreeBSD SMP on?

How do I check if SMP is on in FreeBSD? And if its off what do I need to do to turn it on? Thanks.

    Try sysctl -a | less

If SMP support hasn't enabled, you have to enable it by recompling kernel.

What option says if SMP is on or not? Also, is there a guide on recompiling the generic 5.4 kernel with SMP? Thanks.

    To enable SMP add

options SMP # Symmetric MultiProcessor Kernel
    In kernal configuration file.

The below execution should give you back the number of cpus you have. If SMP is not enabled I believe it should only show one.

    # sysctl kern.smp.cpus
    kern.smp.cpus: 4

Oh, it only shows 1. Anyone know of a tutorial to recompile the kernel with SMP on? Also, if possible turn on extended memory at the same time too because I only show 3.5GB out of 4GB. Thanks.

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO...-building.html is a good read. But normally you'll want to update your kernel and world sources prior to rebuilding anything (so you have the latest patched release). If you update the sources, make sure to see whether you also need to rebuild the world. Typically if you're just rebuilding the same kernel sources you don't need to touch the world.

Thank you. I had to use procedure 1 on this page though...
