Woodcrest and Opteron dilemma
Good Afternoon Everyone,
I am looking for one more server to buy. Decided to take it from server4sale since I've already one here.
Some configs:
Intel Dual Core Dual Xeon Woodcrest 5130 (SoftLayer)
* 4 x 2.0GHz Processors - 4 x 2MB Cache
* 2GB ECC FB-DIMM 667 Ram
* 2x 73GB 10K RPM SA-SCSI
* CentOS 4.3 (32 bit)
* 100 Mbps public uplink
* MySQL 4.1 for Linux
Total Price: $384 + Will take RAID1 controller. So something near 400+
--------------------------
AMD Dual Core Dual Opteron 275 (LayeredTech)
* AMD Dual Core Dual Opteron 275
* 2048MB ECC RAM
* 2x 73GB SCSI
* CentOS 4.x
* 100Mbit/s port
* IDE/SCSI - RAID 1
Total Price: $405
Which one would you take and why? Site will be receiving lots of mysql queries...

As much as I love (and use) Opterons, I would choose the Xeon. Intel's new chips are very fast and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

First server is my choose. I personally think Softlayer has better network and support than Layeredtech, and I can also setup RAID1 which will help for mysql because you get fast I/O. Woodcrest 5130 is also a great/newest chip of Intel!

I'd go for the Woodcrest. From my benchmarks, it should work out about 20% faster than the Opteron. (Your mileage may vary, but SpecInt gives similar figures.)

I would definitely go with Woodcrest too. However, I don't know much about server4sale, I suggest you to do a research on all companies offering similar deals before you decide which one to choose.

Server4sale is a great company to work with, they've had some of the fastest response times I've seen. The Woodcrest machine would perform better than the opteron machine.

My opinion is this is the good choice!
In our company we have two Opteron based servers{ 1 gb DDR in Raid 5} and we are not very happy from our decision.
So for the same price something like 400 bucks the Xeons are much faster
