Does anyone know if its possible to send a message to a computer when they connect to my network?
Maybe when they open the browser for the first time?
Thanks alot!

With certain routers, namely the Linksys WRT54, you can setup a hot spot service that will automatically load a certain page for them when they open their browser.

if you have a spare pc with two nics to use as a gateway, this solution works great:

you mean sending messages between PC?
use command prompt and do:
net send /user "message"
I remember you have to enable a windows service in order to use the net command to exchange messages
If you want the user to send you a message when he opens a browser, then you'll have to do some windows service programming and run it in background and then check for the user action, or maybe what tasks are running on that PC and issue the net command to send you a message.

That will most likely not work anymore since Microsoft disabled Messenger by default from XP SP1 onwards to stop people getting spammed with advertisments.
As suggested the best way is probably to use some hotspot software.

If someone connects to an access point with WEP disabled (like a home system or cafe, etc..) does the owner of the connection see the person connected? We have a wireless network setup at home and I wondered if people connected to my router if I'd be able to notice?
