It's been a loooong time since I needed to check out for a new webhost. The last time I wanted to get something, I had been impressed by media temple's offers.
When I came back to their site, I've seen the radical change they went over with gridserver, and naturally I came here to see what is was really about, and I'm not satisfied !
So, I'm looking for an alternative to what media temple had to offer back then... Good prices (I'm not looking for budget hosting, but I don't want to go bankrupt for hosting! ), good service... And notoriety.
Any idea? I'm getting lost in the incredible amounr of hosts and offers, and getting a quote out of HostQuote doesn't really satisfy me.
I've been over with a 50 USD per year hosting (myidealhost.com, not to name it!) with some site and I've got superb service and all. For the needs to that site, it was perfect. Still, I'm having more and more needs. They still can make the job, but for a budget hosting, it's normal not to have the best machine specs.. I'm getting some slowdowns, with is normal.
The first idea I had at the time I got that package was: "I'm a student, watch your budget". Now, I'm still student, so, I still need to wach over it. Between 8 to 10$ a month should be reasonably acceptable. That's still in the range of budget hostings, I presume but for what I need, I don't see why I should pay more (except for the notoriety point said before, I don't want to get hosted by a startup... No harm to startups )
Need the lastest php compilation installed (I've developping at 5.20 right now). As much as mysql DB as possible, idem with hosted / parked domain. I'm not saying unlimited (don't like that), but the best possible.
As for bandwidth and disk space I'm curently having 500 mb disk / 50gb bandwidth. Woa, that's big. I'm not that ressource needing... Between 100-200mb disk and corresponding bandwidth should be great. I'd also be glad to have good machine that'll host my sites. I'm developping PHP and, no, I'm not badly coding, but that's developpment, I can't afford slowdown / downtime (especially with mysql, wich is mostly why I won't got with MT's gridserver, reading comments here).
I also need to be able to edit the MX records (or having them modified), I'm using Google Apps for your Domain to get my emails...
