Thread: Cannot FTP

  1. #1

    Cannot FTP

Due to Taiwan's earthquake, I thought my server is "dying". So I reboot.

Since then I cannot access the server through FTP.

I contacted hivelocity.com and got this response.

The server is up and responding to ssh. You will need to look at your server's log to see why it is denying ftp. As this is a self managed server all we provide support for is network connectivity so you can login to the box and any hardware related issues
Which is a fair answer. Okay... So I need to check server's log. Where should I check?

When I tried to connect to FTP I got the following message:
    Connecting to 69.46.27.111:21
    Connect failure

    That's it.

This depends on the FTPd that you are using. Check its configuration file for the path to the file it logs to.

[[email protected]] ~ $ cat .signature
cat: .signature: No such file or directory

Okay, what is ftpd? How do I know which one I use. I am using cpanel and linux.

    I am using ws-ftp.

Before I did the reboot, ftp works just fine.

ftpd is the ftp deamon running on the server, which simply means the ftp server. On a cpanel it should be either pro-ftpd or pure-ftpd.

To find which one, SSH into the server and run the following command. You can see the ftp server running inside the server.

    telnet localhost 21

If there is no output that means the ftp server is not running.

telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

Allright, what's wrong and how do I fix it?

I see, I told whm to restart the pure ftp. So it's not restarted when I reboot. How do I ensure that it's restarted during reboot latter?

go to WHM --> FTP configuration

    Click on switch to pro-ftpd.

Once that is done check inside the server

    telnet localhost 21

It's working. I go to whm and restart the ftp service.

Just to make it clear, hivelocity.com is fine. It is true that their TOS does not include debugging my site because it's a managed server and because it's cheap. So, it's a fair statement.

However, some of their customer service, like Rob, or Vicky, often helps me way beyond what's their TOS prescribe.

I am still glad I moved out of managed.com to them.
